We finally found dog food that our dogs like to eat. It only took seven years! We have tried about every kind of high quality dog food out there. They would eat various types reluctantly, a little, or fairly well for a month or two. Then, after that, it was like we were poisoning them. Seriously, we would let them go without eating, but the longest we could last was a day, so they always won the battle.
We finally found Prairie dog food by Nature's Variety. It is made in the USA and contains no fillers or by-products. They use whole foods for their meat proteins and grains, then add omega fatty acids like flax-seed and fish oil as supplements to help with a dog's coat. If you read any dog food reviews that are strictly for dog food, Nature's Variety gets five stars for all of their foods. We use their kibble and raw bites, to give a balance between raw and dry.
Their kibble has a good balance of 70% whole proteins and 30% grains, fruits, and vegetables, which has been covered with a freeze dried raw coating that appeals to their smell senses. This kibble balance has worked out really well for our dog, Dakota. He has a bit of a sensitive stomach. All the other high protein quality dog kibble had a mixture of 90/10% balance which was too rich for Dakota's stomach. We have been using the lamb recipe which has oatmeal in the 30% range. He isn't reluctant to eat it, and he now has firm bowel movements. Since they are mid-size dogs, they get a cup of kibble in the morning, and then a cup at night with 2/3's a cup of raw bites as a topper.
The raw bites add an additional flavor that they like. It comes in almost kibble size pellets which defrost in about 5-10 minutes when sitting at room temperature. They have a 70/30% balance of whole meats and organs with the 30% being fruits and vegetables. The lamb bites are made with sweet potatoes, which the dogs like.
Nature's Variety makes Prairie dog food in lamb, chicken, beef, duck, salmon, and venison proteins. It comes in kibble, raw bites, and canned. They also make the Instinct line of kibble, raw, and canned foods. Our dogs ate that for a while, too, but they seem to like the Prairie line better. Either dog food is a premium dog food that will contribute to your dog's overall health. Our dogs have not had any health problems and they are 6 and 7 years old. We feel it is because we have always fed them high quality dog food. Check out Nature's Variety pet food. I don't think you will be disappointed.
